A handwoven mat makes a wedding return gift that guests use rather than store: our sambhu grass and banana fibre mats weigh about a kilogram each, roll small enough to carry home from the hall, and cost about ₹1,700 to ₹2,000 at the time of writing. Bulk orders go through our Contact page, lead times depend on the loom schedule, and personalisation is limited by what a handloom can honestly do. Here is how it works.
The tradition, and why a mat fits it
Return gifts at South Indian weddings have long been useful things: a steel vessel, a cloth, a bag of turmeric and kumkum, sometimes a small mat. The idea is that the guest takes home something they will use and remember the family by. A grass mat sits squarely in that tradition. It is an everyday household object in Tamil Nadu, it is made by hand in our own workshop in Komarapalayam, and it is used for prayer, for sitting, for sleeping on a hot night and for yoga. It also packs without plastic, which matters when a few hundred of anything leave a hall in one evening.

Sambu Jute is the least expensive and, despite its name, contains no jute: the name is historical, and the mat is sambhu grass woven with organic cotton, with fine plant-dyed stripes. Sambu Frame has a plain tan field with a paler border and is the one most people choose when they want something that will suit every guest's home. Banana Fibre is undyed and a little firmer, and suits a family that wants a gift with a story about the fibre; we tell that story in banana fibre yoga mats: how a stem becomes a mat.
All three have a thin layer of natural tree latex brushed onto the underside by hand so they hold on tile, marble and wood. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first; for a gift to many people, it is worth mentioning the latex on a small card.

How a bulk order works
Write to us through the Contact page with four things: the number of mats, which mat or mats, the wedding date, and where they need to go. We will reply with what the looms can do in that time. We do not quote lead times in this article because they genuinely depend on what is being woven when you write; a few dozen grass mats is a different matter from a few hundred. The honest rule is to ask as soon as the date is fixed. Wholesale and studio orders: how to enquire sets out the same process in more detail, and the Shipping page has our current delivery terms.
What personalisation can and cannot mean
A handloom weaves pattern into the cloth; it does not print. So the realistic options are a choice of mat and, for a large enough order, a conversation about colour within the plant dyes we use. Names, dates and monograms are not something our looms do, and we would rather say so than promise embroidery we would have to send elsewhere. If you want the gift to carry the couple's names, a printed card tucked into the roll does it well and costs little. Ask us on the Contact page and we will tell you plainly what is possible for your quantity.
Expect slight variation between mats: shade, stripe spacing and binding will differ a little from one to the next, because each is woven by hand. We explain what counts as variation and what counts as a fault in why no two handwoven mats are identical.
Frequently asked questions
Are grass mats a good wedding return gift?
Yes, in the way the tradition intends: they are useful, light to carry home, made by hand in Tamil Nadu and used daily for sitting, prayer, sleeping and yoga. Ours cost about ₹1,700 to ₹2,000 each at the time of writing.
What is the minimum quantity for a bulk order?
We do not fix one here; it depends on the mat and the loom schedule. Tell us your number and date through the Contact page and we will answer plainly.
Can you add the couple's names to the mats?
Not on the loom; a handloom weaves pattern, not text. A printed card inside each roll is the honest way to carry names and a date. For large orders we can discuss colour within our plant dyes.
How far in advance should we order?
As soon as the wedding date is fixed. Lead times depend on what is on the looms when you write, and we would rather decline than promise what we cannot weave in time.
