For most senior citizens, the best yoga mat is one that stays put on the floor, lies flat without curling and is easy to clean and carry, rather than the thickest or softest one. A dense handwoven cotton mat gives steady footing and a little comfort under the knees; a firm grass mat suits seated and chair-based practice. We weave three mats that fit these needs: the 7 mm Diamond Clay, the 5 mm six-ply Prithvi rug, and the Darbha grass mat that folds flat.

What matters more than thickness
Mats for older practitioners are often sold on padding alone. Four other things matter more.
Stability under the feet
Soft foam gives under weight, so a standing balance or a step back into a lunge is done on a surface that keeps moving. Handwoven cotton is dense: it compresses very little, so the foot meets something steady. Our cotton mats also have a thin layer of natural tree latex brushed onto the underside by hand, which holds on tile, marble and wood, the floors most Indian homes have. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first.
Edges that lie flat
A mat whose corners curl is something to catch a toe on. Woven cotton with a bit of weight to it lies flat from the first day and has no memory of being rolled. The Darbha mat is backed in cotton cloth and folds along its three panels, so it opens flat and does not curl either.
Weight you can carry
If the mat goes to a class or up to the terrace, weight counts. Our mats run from about 1 kg (grass) to about 1.8 kg (the 7 mm Diamond); a cloth strap tied round the roll makes any of them easier to carry.
Easy cleaning
A daily practice calls for a mat that can be properly washed, not just wiped. The Diamond mats can go in a washing machine on a delicate 30 °C cycle in a laundry bag. The Prithvi rug is hand washed cold. The Darbha is wiped and aired. Our Mat care page has the details for each.
Three mats we would suggest
Diamond Clay: the most cushioning we weave
The Diamond Clay is a 7 mm mat of GOTS-certified organic cotton, 183 × 68 cm, about 1.8 kg. A raised diamond lattice gives the hands and feet something to hold, and the lines double as a guide for lining up heels and palms. It is the mat we would pick for anyone who kneels, sits back on the heels or spends time in table-top. The clay colour comes from alkanet root. At the time of writing it costs ₹4,450.
Prithvi: a softer rug, a little longer
The Prithvi is a six-ply cotton rug, 5 mm thick, and at 188 × 69 cm it is one of the longest mats we make. Six-ply cotton feels softer and warmer than a flat weave, which is pleasant for lying postures and for a slow practice on a cold floor. It has hand-knotted tassels at either end and an earth-toned ground with the seven chakra bands across the centre. Hand wash it cold. At the time of writing it costs ₹4,400.
Darbha: for seated and chair practice
The Darbha is woven from darbha (kusha) grass in three panels, bound in orange cotton and backed in cotton cloth. It is about 4 mm thick, 183 × 90 cm, about 1.2 kg, and it folds flat rather than rolling, so it can live in a cupboard or a bag. The surface is firm and cool, which many people prefer for pranayama, meditation and chair yoga. It is not a cushioned mat, and it has no latex layer. At the time of writing it costs ₹4,999.

Chair yoga on a mat
If you practise from a chair, the mat has two jobs: to stop the chair's front legs sliding, and to give the feet a grippy surface. Any of our latex-backed cotton mats will do this on a hard floor; put the chair's front legs on the mat and leave the rest for the feet. The Darbha's 90 cm width makes it easy to set a chair squarely on it.
Getting down and up again
Cushioning helps less than technique here. Fold the end of the mat under the knee for kneeling postures, keep a folded blanket near by, and use a wall or a sturdy chair for coming up. If you have a knee or hip condition, ask your teacher or doctor what to avoid; a mat is a surface, not a treatment. Our guide to the best yoga mat for bad knees covers folding and props, and practising yoga on a terrace or outdoors covers rough floors and sun.
Frequently asked questions
Is a thicker yoga mat better for seniors?
Not usually. Thick soft mats feel kind under the knees but move under the feet in standing postures, which is exactly where older practitioners want steadiness. A dense 5 to 7 mm cotton mat gives some comfort while staying firm. If kneeling is the main concern, fold the end of the mat double or keep a blanket for those postures.
Which yoga mat is easiest to keep clean?
Among our mats, the 7 mm Diamond is the easiest because it can be machine washed on a delicate 30 °C cycle in a laundry bag and dried flat in shade. The Darbha grass mat is wiped with a damp cloth and aired. Cotton rugs are hand washed cold with a mild natural detergent.
Can I use a cotton yoga mat for chair yoga?
Yes. Place the chair's front legs on the mat so they cannot slide on a tiled or marble floor, and use the rest of the mat for your feet. The natural latex layer on the underside holds the mat to the floor. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first.
If you are choosing for yourself or for a parent, start with the Diamond Clay for floor work or the Darbha for seated practice, or browse all our yoga mats side by side.
