Prana Shakti mat half unrolled, showing the chakra bands at the core

We weave ten mats in three families. Five are GOTS-certified organic cotton: the 5 mm Prana Shakti, Prithvi and Indico rugs, and the 7 mm Diamond Clay and Diamond Orange (₹3,499–₹4,499 at the time of writing). Four are thin, firm plant-fibre mats: three in sambhu grass and one in banana fibre, all 3 mm and about a kilo (₹1,699–₹2,000). One is the traditional cloth-backed Darbha grass mat (₹4,999). In short: for a sweaty flowing practice choose a cotton rug; for knees and floor work choose a Diamond; for travel, heat or a first mat on a budget choose a sambhu grass mat; for meditation choose Darbha or Banana Fibre.

Every mat is handwoven on a handloom by our own weavers in Komarapalayam, Tamil Nadu, with plant dyes where it is dyed at all. All except the Darbha have a thin layer of natural tree latex brushed by hand onto the underside to hold on tile, marble and wood. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first.

The cotton mats

Prana Shakti

Prana Shakti is a six-ply cotton rug on a rose ground, crossed by seven bands in the chakra colours, each from plant dyes: turmeric, neem and tulsi among more than twenty herbs. It is 5 mm thick and our longest size, 188 × 69 cm, about 1.5 kg. The six-ply weave is dense rather than spongy, so it feels firm and connected underfoot and grips better as your palms dampen. Hand wash cold, separately for the first few washes, and dry flat in shade. ₹3,499 at the time of writing.

Prithvi

Prithvi means earth. It is the same six-ply construction as Prana Shakti, 5 mm, 188 × 69 cm, about 1.5 kg, but on an earth-toned ground with the seven chakra bands across its centre and hand-knotted tassels at either end. Choose it over Prana Shakti for the quieter colour; the practice feel is the same. Same hand-wash care. ₹4,400 at the time of writing.

Indico

Indico is the simplest mat we make and the one that shows the weave best: organic cotton dyed in true indigo, woven in a ribbed pattern with hand-knotted tassels. It is 5 mm, 183 × 68 cm, about 1.4 kg. Indigo rubs a little when new and softens over the years, which is the nature of the dye. Hand wash cold, dry flat in shade. ₹4,499 at the time of writing.

Diamond Clay

Diamond Clay is, with Diamond Orange, the thickest mat we weave, 7 mm of cotton, 183 × 68 cm, about 1.8 kg. A raised diamond lattice, the butterfly-eye pattern, gives the surface its grip and doubles as an alignment grid. The clay colour comes from alkanet root. With Diamond Orange, it is also the easiest of our cotton mats to clean: machine wash on a delicate 30 °C cycle in a laundry bag, or hand wash, and dry flat away from sun. ₹4,450 at the time of writing.

Diamond Orange

Diamond Orange is the same 7 mm butterfly-eye construction and size as the Clay, with a plant-dyed orange lattice over a soft grey ground. Everything else, including the machine-wash care, is identical. Pick by colour. ₹4,450 at the time of writing.

The sambhu grass and banana fibre mats

Sambu Diamond

Sambu Diamond is sambhu grass woven with organic cotton, a pale grass field with a diamond lattice in plant-dyed green and peach. It is 3 mm, 183 × 68.5 cm, about 1 kg, cool against the skin and firm underfoot. Shake out, wipe with a damp cloth, air in shade; never soak or machine wash. ₹1,999 at the time of writing.

Sambu Jute

Sambu Jute contains no jute; the name is historical. It is sambhu grass woven with organic cotton in fine plant-dyed stripes, bound in cream cotton, 3 mm, 183 × 68.5 cm, about 1 kg. It is the lowest-priced mat we make and the same cool, firm, wipe-clean mat as its two siblings. ₹1,699 at the time of writing.

Sambu Frame

Sambu Frame is the weave our weavers call the TV pattern: a warm tan field framed by a paler border, in sambhu grass and GOTS-certified organic cotton. 3 mm, 183 × 68.5 cm, about 1 kg, wipe-clean like the other sambhu mats. ₹1,799 at the time of writing.

Banana Fibre

Banana Fibre is woven from banana bark and fibre taken from the stem after the fruit is harvested, undyed and bound with cotton. It is 3 mm, 183 × 68.5 cm, about 1 kg, with a firm, breathable texture that suits seated practice. A little fibre fuzz is normal. Care is the same as sambhu: shake, wipe, air in shade, never soak. ₹2,000 at the time of writing.

The darbha mat

Darbha

Darbha is darbha, or kusha, grass, the grass traditionally spread for meditation and ritual across Tamil Nadu. We weave it in three panels, bind it in orange cotton and back it in cotton cloth, so it folds flat rather than rolling. It is about 4 mm, 183 × 90 cm, about 1.2 kg, and it has no latex layer. It suits long sits, pranayama, the terrace and a summer night's sleep more than a fast flow. Wipe clean, keep dry, air in shade, fold to store. ₹4,999 at the time of writing.

Quick picks by need

You sweat, and you flow. A cotton rug: Indico or Prana Shakti. Cotton grips better as it dampens and goes in a bucket afterwards.

Your knees and back want more between them and the floor. A 7 mm Diamond Clay or Diamond Orange. Dense cotton is firmer than foam, so read our thickness guide before you decide.

You are tall. The two chakra rugs are 188 cm long, our longest.

You want a mat you can machine wash. Only the two Diamonds: delicate 30 °C, in a laundry bag.

You travel, or you practise through the hot months. A sambhu grass mat at about a kilo: Sambu Diamond, Sambu Jute or Sambu Frame. The Darbha folds flat, which some travellers prefer.

You mostly sit. Darbha for the traditional, wide seat; Banana Fibre or a sambhu mat for a lighter one. Put a cushion on top.

It is your first mat and the budget is tight. Sambu Jute at ₹1,699 at the time of writing. It will teach you whether you like a firm mat. Our 10-point checklist walks through the rest.

You want a single colour. Indico.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the TwinsPoles cotton mats and grass mats?

The cotton mats (Prana Shakti, Prithvi, Indico, Diamond Clay, Diamond Orange) are 5–7 mm thick, soft, absorbent and washable, suited to sweaty flowing practice and floor work. The sambhu grass and banana fibre mats are 3 mm, firm, cool and wipe-clean only, suited to hot weather, travel and seated practice. The Darbha is a cloth-backed grass mat for meditation and sleeping. All weigh between about 1 and 1.8 kg.

Which TwinsPoles mat is thickest?

Diamond Clay and Diamond Orange, at 7 mm of handwoven cotton with a raised diamond lattice. The three chakra and indigo rugs are 5 mm, the Darbha about 4 mm, and the sambhu grass and banana fibre mats 3 mm. Thickness in dense cotton feels firmer than the same thickness in foam.

Which TwinsPoles mats can be machine washed?

Only Diamond Clay and Diamond Orange, on a delicate 30 °C cycle in a laundry bag, dried flat away from sun. Prana Shakti, Prithvi and Indico should be hand washed cold, because machine washing can fade plant dyes. The grass and banana fibre mats must never be soaked or machine washed; shake, wipe with a damp cloth and air in shade.

Do all TwinsPoles mats have a latex backing?

All except the Darbha. The cotton, sambhu grass and banana fibre mats have a thin layer of natural tree latex brushed by hand onto the underside to hold on tile, marble and wood; after many washes it can soften, and a thin fresh coat restores it. The Darbha is backed in cotton cloth and folds flat. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first.

How long is a TwinsPoles yoga mat?

Prana Shakti and Prithvi are 188 × 69 cm, our longest. Indico and the two Diamonds are 183 × 68 cm, the sambhu grass and banana fibre mats 183 × 68.5 cm, and the Darbha 183 × 90 cm, our widest. If you need a different size, ask us through the Contact page; we cannot promise, but we can tell you what the loom allows.

Next step

If you have narrowed it to a family, browse by fibre: cotton, sambhu grass, banana fibre or darbha. If you are still torn, Indico is the mat we would hand a friend who asked for one.
