Best yoga mat for carpet and rugs

On carpet the best yoga mat is thin and firm, not thick and soft. Why carpet changes the rules, how to steady balances, and three mats that work over pile.

Prithvi mat partly rolled

On carpet the best yoga mat is thin and firm, not thick and soft. The carpet already provides padding, and a cushioned mat on top makes balances wobble and wrists sink. A 3 mm grass mat or a dense woven cotton rug gives a level, firm surface over the pile. Grip is rarely the problem on carpet, since very little slides on it, so choose for firmness, size and washability. From our range we would suggest the Prithvi six-ply cotton rug, the Banana Fibre mat and the Sambu Jute grass mat.

Carpet changes the problem

Most advice about yoga mats assumes a hard floor: the mat has to stop you sliding and give your knees something soft. On carpet both of those are already taken care of, and two new problems appear.

The first is wobble: a soft carpet under a soft mat is two layers of give, and in tree pose the standing foot has nothing firm to press into. The second is sinking hands: in plank and downward dog the heel of the hand presses through a padded mat into the pile and the wrist angle changes without you noticing. The answer to both is to take padding away, not add it: a thin, dense mat that lies flat and spreads your weight over the pile.

What to look for

Firm and thin. Woven cotton and grass are dense and do not compress like foam, so they bridge the pile; 3 to 5 mm is plenty when the carpet is doing the cushioning (see our thickness guide).

Flat and heavy enough. A mat that lies flat under its own weight is steadier than a light one that lifts at the corners.

Easy to clean. Carpet fibres, hair and dust cling to the underside of any mat, so choose one you can shake out, wipe or wash.

Three mats that work on carpet

Prithvi: a dense six-ply cotton rug

The Prithvi is a six-ply handwoven rug of GOTS-certified organic cotton, 5 mm thick, with an earth-toned ground, seven chakra colour bands across the centre and hand-knotted tassels. Six-ply cotton is dense: 5 mm of it feels firmer than the same thickness of foam, which is what carpet wants. At 188 × 69 cm (74 × 27 in) it is one of the two longest mats we weave and about 1.5 kg, so it lies flat and stays flat. The dyes are Ayurvedic plant dyes, turmeric, neem and tulsi among more than twenty herbs.

Like our other cotton mats it has a thin layer of natural tree latex brushed onto the underside; on carpet it has less to do than on tile, but it helps the rug hold the pile. Hand wash cold with a mild natural detergent, separately for the first washes, and dry flat in shade. At the time of writing it is ₹4,400.

Banana Fibre: firm, flat and plain

The Banana Fibre mat is woven from banana bark and fibre, bound at the ends with cotton, undyed. It is 3 mm, 183 × 68.5 cm (72 × 27 in) and about 1 kg. It is the firmest mat we make, and on carpet that firmness is the whole point: standing poses feel planted and the hands do not sink. The natural latex underside holds it to the pile. It is wiped clean rather than washed, so shake it out well after practice. At the time of writing it is ₹2,000.

Sambu Jute: fine stripes, light weight

The Sambu Jute is sambhu grass woven with organic cotton in fine plant-dyed stripes, bound in cream cotton. The name is historical; the mat contains no jute. It is 3 mm, 183 × 68.5 cm (72 × 27 in) and about 1 kg, with a natural latex underside, and it is the least expensive mat we weave at ₹1,699 at the time of writing. On carpet it is cool and firm, and light enough to shake out over the balcony rail each morning. Wipe with a damp cloth, never soak.

If you kneel and lie down a lot and want a rug that feels like furniture, the Prithvi. If balances are your weak point and you want the firmest possible surface, the Banana Fibre. If you want the lightest, least expensive mat to shake out daily, the Sambu Jute.

All three have a natural latex layer on the underside. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first.

Steadying balances on carpet

Even with a firm mat, carpet gives a little. Spread the toes and press into the whole foot rather than gripping with them. Choose a drishti, a fixed point to look at, slightly ahead on the floor. Take wider stances than you would on tile. And if a particular corner of the room is firmer, often where the carpet is stretched tight near a wall, practise there.

If you also practise on rubber

Many people practise on carpet at home and on a rubber mat at a studio. A cotton rug like the Prithvi does both jobs, alone on carpet and laid over the rubber in class; we cover when that helps in Layering a cotton rug over a rubber mat.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a yoga mat on carpet at all?

Not strictly, but most people want one. Carpet is soft enough that balances wobble and hands sink, and it holds dust and hair where you put your face. A thin, firm mat gives a level surface over the pile, marks out your practice space and can be shaken out or washed in a way a carpet cannot.

Should a yoga mat for carpet be thick or thin?

Thin. The carpet already cushions, and a thick mat on top makes two layers of give, so standing poses wobble and the wrists sink in plank. A dense 3 to 5 mm mat of woven cotton or grass spreads your weight over the pile and feels far steadier than a thick foam mat.

Will a cotton or grass mat slide on carpet?

Very little slides on carpet, and our mats have a thin layer of natural tree latex brushed onto the underside that holds the pile. The weight of a rug like the Prithvi also keeps it flat. If you are allergic to natural latex, choose with care and write to us first.

If balances have been wobbling on your carpet, try the Banana Fibre mat, or compare everything we weave in the collection.
